About Race Cutoff Pace Planner
Check one finish-line cutoff by reserving athlete-supplied stop time and a safety buffer, then calculating constant required moving pace and speed. This does not model checkpoints, terrain, weather, or fatigue.
Separate finish-line cutoff time from moving time
Reserve athlete-supplied stop time and a safety buffer from one finish-line cutoff, then divide the remaining moving time by event distance. The result is constant-pace arithmetic, not a forecast of checkpoint timing, terrain, weather, or fatigue.
Enter the official finish-line constraint
Use the organizer's current event distance and finish-line cutoff. Course changes, wave starts, and published intermediate checkpoint cutoffs can alter the real constraints, so the athlete guide remains authoritative.
The safety buffer is time you choose to keep in reserve. Planned stop time should include the aid-station, equipment, bathroom, or other non-moving time you expect rather than hiding it inside moving pace.
Audit the available moving time
Available moving time equals cutoff time minus planned stops and the selected buffer. Required moving pace is that time divided by distance; required speed is the reciprocal conversion. If stops plus buffer consume the cutoff, no finite moving pace can satisfy the scenario.
Changing metric or imperial display preserves the same physical scenario.
Treat the result as a minimum arithmetic average
The calculated pace assumes the same average while moving. It does not model climbs, descents, technical trail, darkness, weather, navigation, congestion, fatigue, or changing aid-station needs.
A race with intermediate checkpoint cutoffs needs a checkpoint-by-checkpoint plan. A finish-line average can appear feasible while an early climb or slow section still misses a course-control time.
Frequently asked questions
Does required moving pace include aid-station stops?
No. The calculator first subtracts the planned stop time you enter, then calculates the average pace required during the remaining moving time.
Can this calculator check intermediate checkpoint cutoffs?
No. It evaluates one finish-line cutoff. Checkpoints can have separate distances and deadlines that require their own segment calculations from the current organizer information.
Is the calculated pace a terrain-adjusted race prediction?
No. It is a constant moving-pace threshold for the entered time budget. It does not predict the effects of terrain, weather, fatigue, navigation, or pacing variability.
