Triathlon Time Budget Calculator

Check whether athlete-entered discipline and transition times fit inside a finish-time target. Enter times as MM:SS or HH:MM:SS.

Planned Finish

5:25:00

Total Transitions

10:00

Goal Buffer

5:00

Planned finish = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run. Buffer is goal time minus planned finish.

About Triathlon Time Budget Calculator

Add athlete-entered swim, bike, run, T1, and T2 times and compare their total with a chosen triathlon finish-time goal. This auditable time budget reports the remaining buffer or overage without predicting pace, fitness, race conditions, or official cutoffs.

Work backward from a triathlon finish-time goal

Add the swim, T1, bike, T2, and run times you enter, then compare that planned total with an athlete-chosen finish goal. This is an auditable time budget, not a pace predictor, fitness forecast, or official cutoff check.

Start with a goal and athlete-entered leg times

Enter a finish-time goal, then supply a planned time for each discipline and transition. The calculator does not derive those assumptions from distance, pace, power, or prior performance, so use values that reflect the event and preparation you are actually planning.

Treat T1 and T2 as separate parts of the race rather than hiding them inside the bike or run. Equipment layout, wetsuit removal, mount lines, venue flow, and organizer rules can all change the transition assumptions you choose.

Check the complete arithmetic

Planned finish equals swim plus T1 plus bike plus T2 plus run. Goal buffer is the finish-time goal minus that planned total; when the plan is longer than the goal, the calculator reports the overage instead.

For example, a 40-minute swim, 6-minute T1, 2:45 bike, 4-minute T2, and 1:50 run total 5:25. Against a 5:30 goal, the remaining arithmetic buffer is five minutes.

  • Keep every leg and transition assumption visible.
  • Change one time at a time to see which assumption moves the total.
  • Use the same physical time budget in metric or imperial display mode.

Do not mistake buffer for finish confidence

A positive buffer only means the entered times add up below the chosen goal. It does not estimate the chance that those times are sustainable or account for hills, currents, wind, heat, congestion, fueling, fatigue, penalties, mechanical delays, or course variation.

This page also does not validate organizer cutoffs. Official finish and intermediate cutoff rules can use wave starts, time-of-day deadlines, or segment limits, so the current athlete guide and race briefing remain authoritative.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator predict my triathlon finish time?

No. It adds the discipline and transition times you enter. Use the result to audit a scenario, not as a fitness or race-condition forecast.

Are T1 and T2 included in the planned finish?

Yes. Both transitions are explicit inputs, are included in the planned finish, and are also shown together as total transition time.

Is the finish-time goal an official race cutoff?

No. It is an athlete-entered comparison target. Check the organizer's current rules for finish-line and intermediate cutoffs.
